Crash Involving Police Car Shuts Down Route 53 In Romeoville

The officer has been released from the hospital, the department said.

ROMEOVILLE, IL — A crash involving a dump truck and a police squad car sent an officer to the hospital and closed a portion of northbound Route 53 in Romeoville Friday, according to Romeoville Police. The officer has been released from the hospital, and the closure is supposed to open up at around 2 p.m. Friday.

The police car was struck by the dump truck Friday morning, causing first responders to close the northbound lanes for Route 53 near Renwick around 10 a.m., said Deputy Chief Steve Lucchesi said. A police officer was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries and has since been released, Lucchesi said.

The truck driver was not hurt in the crash. No citations have been issued, as the incident is still under investigation, Lucchesi said.

The closed portion of Route 53 is slated to open at about 2 p.m. Friday. Until then, Romeoville Police suggested using Weber Road as an alternative.

UPDATE: Northbound lanes of Route 53 were re-opened around 2:30 p.m. Friday.
