Romeoville Area Historical Society is on the Move
The society will have a new home in April

The Romeoville Area Historical Society will be moving from its current location of 10 Montrose Drive to a single-family home at 14 Belmont Drive.
The society currently shares an old police station with the Romeoville Chamber of Commerce and the Northern Will County Special Recreation Association. The recreation association will be taking over the whole building at 10 Montrose Drive.
“It’s going to be nice having having our own building,” Nancy Hackett, director of the Romeoville Area Historical Society said in a phone interview on Tuesday. She said the society has moved twice since its founding in 1980.

The society will be moving out in mid-April, but their new home may not be immediately ready. The building will be renovated, and a 400 square-foot addition is planned.
“We’re planning on sorting things out so we have a changing display,” Hackett said.

The society is open on Monday and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. Featured historical items include the door from the original Romeo jail, an ornate cash register from the old grain elevator, and military uniforms from every branch of service.
Hackett said the society has also has attendance records from area one-room school houses going back to the 1860s, and an extensive obituary file.
“It’s very rewarding when people call up for information...and we have it,” Hackett said.
