Romeoville's Top 2017 Chicago Marathon Finishers

A total of 28 Romeoville residents took part in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

CHICAGO, IL — The 40th running of the Chicago Marathon made its way through the city's streets on Sunday, with an American winning the race for the first time since 2002. More than 40,000 people competed in the marathon, which began and ended in Grant Park. Among the marathoners were 28 runners from right here in Romeoville.

Steven Furtek, 46, was the first Romeoville man to cross the finish line at four hours, 17 minutes and ten seconds. Romeoville's top female finisher was Shucinta Birge, 41, with a time of 04:28:37.

Galen Rupp of Portland, Oregon, was the first American to win the men’s race in 15 years with a time of 2:09:20. Kenyan Abel Kirui came in second, finishing 28 secnods after Rupp. Another Kenyan, Bernard Kipyego, was third.

The women's race was won by Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba in 2 hours 18 minutes and 31 seconds. Brigid Kosgei of Kenya came in second and American Jordan Hasay, 26, of California was third.

In the wake of last weekend's mass shooting in Las Vegas, Chicago Marathon security was beefed up this year. Chicago Police reported no major security issues along the 26.2 mile route this year, according to WGN.
