These Cooling Centers Are Available In Will County

These locations are available to those without air conditioning in extreme heat.

WILL COUNTY, IL — After temperatures soared over the long weekend, it's important to note that cooling centers are available to residents in the event of extreme heat. Even with a slight cool down in the forecast this week, it's never too early to be prepared.

Will County reminds residents to call ahead to make sure a cooling center is open before heading there.

According to the Will County Emergency Management Agency, these are some of the cooling centers are available to residents in the event of extreme heat:

Things will cool off a bit Wednesday, according to the forecast, with a high of 75 degrees. Thursday, the high will be back around the 90s and high 80s.

Ready.gov advises resident to prepare for extreme heat:

  • Find places in your community where you can go to get cool.
  • Keep your home cool by doing the following:
    • Cover windows with drapes or shades.
    • Weather-strip doors and windows.
    • Use window reflectors, such as aluminum foil-covered cardboard, to reflect heat back outside.
    • Add insulation to keep the heat out.
    • Use attic fans to clear hot air.
    • Install window air conditioners and insulate around them.
  • Learn to recognize the signs of heat-related illness.

To keep yourself safe in extreme heat:

  • Find air conditioning.
  • Avoid strenuous activities.
  • Watch for heat illness.
  • Wear light clothing.
  • Check on family members and neighbors.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Watch for heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
  • Never leave people or pets in a closed car.
