Want To See A Spectral Car? Visit White Cemetery On Cuba Road
One of the oldest cemeteries in the state, Barrington's White Cemetery is famous for being home to visitors from the beyond.
ROMEOVILLE, IL — Less than an hour drive away from Romeoville, lies one of the oldest cemeteries in the Chicagoland area that is said to house several visitors from the beyond. The White Cemetery is located at 26274 W. Cuba Road in Barrington was officially chartered in 1855, although there were possibly several other burials prior to that.
Often hailed as one of the most haunted spots in Illinois — and the second most haunted cemetery after Bachelor's Grove — the spooky tales are so well known that they've been published in several books, including "Chicago Haunted Handbook" by Jeff Morris and Vince Shields.
In the book, the authors describe an array of ghost stories. Tales are the most commonly reported activity involved strange globes of light that float around and sometimes even cross the gates and are seen along Cuba Road. While these are definitely scary, the more popular stories are about the figures that have been witnessed there at night.

The group of shadowy figures usually stand near the fence and watch cars pass by on Cuba Road, or just stand near a grove tree inside the cemetery. Witnesses have said that when they approach the figures, they usually "vanish into thin air."
Even during the day, visitors have seen strange shadows cast on the ground that apparently belong to two people holding hands, even though no such people are ever around.

Cuba Road itself is also said to be extremely haunted. Over the years, many people have reported seeing a ghost woman who wanders the road. Some believe, she is the spirit of a lady who was killed on that road. Whoever this woman is, she is not alone. Translucent cars driven by invisible drivers have also been seen. They sometimes turn into White Cemetery and disappear.
Due to its reputation as an eerie spot, the cemetery has also been targeted by teenagers who vandalized headstones.
Are these apparitions actually kids playing pranks or are people actually trying to reach out from beyond the grave? Whether these urban legends are true or not, the cemetery is definitely worth a visit. Who knows, maybe you might get a ride in the spectral car.
