Craigslist Ad Leads to Attempted Robbery at Gunpoint

A man looking to purchase a cell phone from Craigslist was almost robbed when he met the seller on April 14. The offender attempted to rob the victim at gunpoint. A similar incident took place in November near the same location.

Officers responded to an armed robbery in Skokie on April 14 around 4:45 p.m. According to the report, the victim saw an ad for an Apple iPhone on Craigslist and arranged to meet the seller in the 8900 block of Ewing Avenue.

The seller, however, would soon turn into the offender when the duo met.

According to police, the culprit pulled out a black handgun and attempted to rob the man at gunpoint. Rather than hand over his belongings, the victim fled and escaped safely. The offender was described as a black male, 29 to 30-years-of-age, 5-foot-8, 220-pounds with a beard and short hair, police said.

In November 2012, two men looking to purchase 10 Apple iPhone 5s in the 9100 block of Ewing Avenue. That suspect was described as a black male, about 27 to 37-years-of-age, 5-foot-6 and about 210-pounds, the report stated.

Meanwhile, another man looking to purchase an item on Craigslist was the subjectof a vehicle invasion and armed robbery in the 5200 block of Carol Street on March 12. In that instance, one offender approached the driver’s side window and stated he needed help. The driver then rolled down his window and the subject quickly unlocked the vehicle's rear door to make entry.

Once inside the vehicle, the offender would go on to place the driver in a chokehold, police said.

A second offender would soon enter the vehicle through the passenger side door and point a handgun at the driver. He then went on to rob the victim of $400, an Apple iPhone and a set of keys, police said.

Those culprits would ultimately flee the scene in a silver vehicle.
