CTA Yellow Line Train Derailed By Fallen Tree Limb
After high winds knocked a branch onto the tracks near the Oakton–Skokie station, service was suspended for more than five hours.
SKOKIE, IL — A downed tree limb caused a CTA Yellow Line train to derail, suspending service for more than five hours Tuesday evening. Strong winds of up to 70 mph were reported across the Chicago area as the remnants of Tropical Storm Cristobal swept through the area, knocking down power lines and trees.
The derailment occurred near the Oakton–Skokie station. Shortly after 4 p.m., CTA officials announced the suspension of train service. Within about 30 minutes, Evanston police announced all passengers had been safely evacuated from the train with no injuries reported.
Police also closed Asbury Avenue between Brummel and Mulford streets until about 8:30 p.m. due to the derailment. CTA service on the Skokie Swift line was restored by shortly after 9 p.m. with residual delays, according to the agency.
