Fatal Crash Closes Inbound Edens At Dempster Street

A single southbound lane of the Edens Expressway was reopened Friday evening after a pedestrian was struck and killed on the right shoulder.

SKOKIE, IL — A fatal crash shut down all inbound lanes on the Edens Expressway during afternoon rush hour Friday. A tractor-trailer had pulled over around 3 p.m. on the right shoulder of the southbound lanes of Interstate 94 around the Dempster Street overpass, according to Illinois State Police.

A driver and a passenger of the truck had gotten out of the cabin and were standing on the shoulder when a passing car struck the tractor-trailer's passenger.

Khalil Abbelrazig Fouad, 55, of Browns Summit, North Carolina, was pronounced dead shortly before 3:30 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Skokie police said the deadly collision led to the closure of the Old Orchard Road and Dempster Street southbound entrances to the expressway. Shortly after 6 p.m., the left lane of the inbound Edens was reopened to traffic. Delays of about an hour were expected, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.

A state police spokesperson said an investigation into the incident was ongoing. All lanes of the expressway were re-opened around 8 p.m., according to police.
