Former Niles Cop Gets Probation for Stealing from Dead Man

William Christie, 53, was sentenced at a Cook County bench trial earlier this week.

After pleading guilty last month to stealing more than $1,500 in cash from a man who was found dead in his room at the Niles YMCA, ex-Nile police officer William Christie has been sentenced to two years probation, reported the Chicago Tribune.

Christie, who was an officer at the time of the incident, found the body of 57-year-old Larry Pollack in Nov. 2009. Though he sealed access to the room, Christie returned several times and was caught on surveillance cameras stealing cash.

The veteran officer of 27 years resigned before he was charged with the crime. The Village of Niles wants to revoke Christie’s $4,000-a-month pension, according to the Tribune. As part of his probation, Christie, who could have received up to five years in prison, must repay Pollack’s estate.
