Man Wanted In Skokie Murder Arrested By US Marshals In Milwaukee

SKOKIE, IL — A man wanted in connection with last month's fatal shooting of an Evanston resident in a Skokie hotel was arrested by U.S. Marshals last week in Wisconsin.

Patrick E. Jenkins, 24, has been held at the Milwaukee County Jail since Feb. 2 after federal agents executed an arrest warrant issued in the course of an investigation by Skokie police and the North Regional Major Crime Task Force.

Detectives believe Jenkins fatally shot 34-year-old Dyrek Coleman at the Hampton Inn and Suites Chicago North Shore/Skokie, 5201 Old Orchard Road, on the afternoon of Jan. 19, Skokie police confirmed.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office ruled Coleman's death a homicide. Police have not released any information about the investigation since the ruling.

Cook County prosecutors have yet to approve murder charges against Jenkins, according to police, and he has yet to be indicted by a Cook County grand jury.

Wisconsin court records list a Milwaukee home address for Jenkins, although he lived in Evanston last summer, according to police reports.

At an initial court appearance Saturday in Milwaukee, Jenkins waived his right to contest extradition, records show. He is due back in court for a status conference March 5.

Finding probable cause that he faces homicide charges in Illinois and has fled from justice, a judge ordered Jenkins detained for up to 30 days while waiting to be picked up by police to head back to Illinois.

Jenkins was already awaiting trial in Cook County on a charge of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon following a July 2020 arrest at his Sherman Avenue home. Evanston police reported a search of his apartment turned up a .380 handgun, ammunition and 15 cannabis plants.

After his extradition, a Cook County judge ordered Jenkins held without bond at Cook County Jail during his initial court appearance.
