Niles North Cuts Lunch Waste by Half With Green Initiatives
Niles North High School switched to reusable dishes from paper plates in February.

Over the past six weeks, cafeterias in Niles Township High School District 219 have transformed into a more sustainable environment where students recycle, compost and use reusable wares as part of the school district’s zero-waste policy, Skokie Review reported.
Since starting the zero-waste initiative, Niles North High School has reduced the amount of non-recyclable waste it disposes of daily by 50 percent to 100 pounds from 200 pounds, the school also replaced paper plates and plastic utensils with reusable items in February, Skokie Review reported.
