Herbert S. Ross

Died peacefully on Wednesday, November 20th. He was 94 years old, and for the past seven years had been living close to his son's family in Evanston, IL. Born in Montreal, Canada, on March 27, 1919, to Rachel Osmiansky and Jacob Rosenstein, he moved to New York City in 1943. He became a citizen and enlisted in the army in WWII, where he was stationed in North Africa and South Asia. Herb was married to Phyllis Freedman from 1948 until her death in 1970, and they had three children. For almost fifty years, he worked for an automotive export firm, W.D. Blood and Company, becoming a vice president. He spoke French and Spanish and traveled frequently to Central and South America. A lifelong Mason, bridge player, and punster, he enjoyed attending plays and concerts in New York with his companion, Ruth Finley Lein. Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis, his siblings Hilda, Harold and Bunny, and his beloved childhood group of friends, the Flying Squad Athletic Club. He is survived by his children, Harry Ross of Evanston, IL, Josephine Ross of Washington, DC, and Mary Ross of Oakland, CA; their life partners, Heather, Chris, and Marilyn; his grandchildren, Samuel, Madeleine, and Claire; and five nieces and nephews.
