Old Orchard Carjacking Leads To Chase, Crash, SWAT Standoff: Cops

Two suspects who carjacked a man at gunpoint in the Old Orchard Mall parking lot were arrested in Chicago after a pursuit, police said.

SKOKIE, IL — Police said they pursued a man and a boy suspected of a carjacking Sunday at Old Orchard shopping center from Skokie into Chicago, where both were eventually arrested.

The stolen car soon crashed and one boy was taken into custody nearby. But his armed companion barricaded himself in a home more than 3 miles away, leading police to call in a SWAT team, according to Skokie and Chicago police.

The incident began shortly after 6:30 p.m., when a man in the purple parking garage at Westfield Old Orchard reported two robbers had just stolen his gray Infiniti sedan at gunpoint and fled, according to police. The victim was not physically harmed.

A Skokie police officer noticed the stolen Infiniti headed southbound on the Edens Expressway, and he tried to pull it over. Its driver refused to stop, police said.

The pursuit continued into Chicago's Northwest Side, where the stolen car smashed into an empty parked car near Irving Park Road and Keeler Avenue, according to police. Both occupants of the car took off running, police said. The first was arrested a short time later and about two block south of the crash site in the 3800 block of Keeler Avenue.

The second suspect, an adult, was arrested following a standoff with a SWAT team in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood. Chicago police said they were called to barricade situation in the 2100 block of North Lavergene Avenue around 9:30 p.m.

The second suspect was taken into custody around 11 p.m. after turning himself in to Skokie police, who said more information would be released as it becomes available.
