Sunday Storm Damage Severe in Evanston, Skokie

Three injured at Lakefront Arts Festival, trees fall on property and some still are without power.

The worst storm damage on the North Shore occurred in Skokie, where numerous large trees and branches were down and in Evanston, where three were injured at Sunday’s Lakefront Arts Festival and still some 200 ComEd customers remain without power.

According to the Skokie Review, a large downed tree branch fell on top of power lines near Tripp Avenue and Oakton Street and the “quiet Skokie North Shore Sculpture Park looked like a collection ground for kindling after the storm.”

A man living in one of the homes affected by the fallen tree branch told ABC-7-Chicago the branch landed in his living room, but he made it out unharmed.

The city of Evanston was hit hard during the time just before the storm moved its way across Lake Michigan.

As of 8 p.m. Sunday, 1,692 Evanston residents were without power - mostly in the southern end of the city, according to City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz. Nearly 2,000 had been without power during the storm and aftermath - including about 200 as of 7 a.m. Monday.

Three people attending the Lakefront Arts Festival at Dawes Park were hospitalized after being hit by a tree branch.

A second wave of thunderstorms hit the city late Sunday night, but the toll was not as bad as the earlier set of storms which caused the damage, according to Evanston Now.
