Television Reporter, Police Spokesman List Skokie House For $689K

NBC5's Mary Ann Ahern and her husband, Chicago PD's assistant director for news affairs, listed their home near the Evanston-Skokie border.

SKOKIE, IL — Television journalist Mary Ann Ahern and her husband, Chicago police spokesman Tom Ahern, listed their home on the Skokie-Evanston border last month for $689,000. Built in 1946, the home sits within Skokie village limits and Evanston/Skokie School District 65.

Ahern joined WMAQ-TV in 1989 after stints at stations in Peoria and later Atlanta and became political reporter at the local NBC affiliate in 2006. A Northwest Indiana native, she is a recipient of a lifetime achievement award from the Chicago Headline Club, the nation's largest chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

The Aherns purchased the Harding Avenue home in 1993 for $325,000, according to public records.

The two-story, three-bedroom brick Colonial includes just over 3,000 square feet of living space on a 0.18-acre lot, according to its listing. It said the home had a "perfect flow for entertaining or today's casual lifestyle."

The living room features a wood-burning fireplace, and a wall of east-facing windows and French doors open onto the patio overlooking a fenced back yard with a "park-like setting," its listing said.

The powder room has been remodeled and the kitchen has been expanded, according to the listing. There are three bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs, including the master suite.

The basement has been finished with a rec room, a spare room and a fireplace. The home also includes an attached one-car garage.

The estimated 2018 market value of the 71-year-old home is $583,430, according to the Cook County assessor's office, and its 2017 tax bill was $14,535.

Local school districts include Walker Elementary School, Chute Middle School and Evanston Township High School.
