Always Bad News On Virus? Nope. Check Western Springs Numbers

The village sees the best statistics on the coronavirus since mid-October.

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — If you think the media are always alarmist about the coronavirus, you may want to keep this story in mind as contrary to your theory.

The last week was good news on the pandemic front in Western Springs: The city saw an increase of 5.5 percent in coronavirus cases in the last week. That's the lowest percentage increase since mid-October.

In terms of the raw number of cases, Western Springs also fared well: As of Sunday, the city has seen 709 coronavirus cases since the pandemic began. That's an increase of 37 from than the week before. That's better than each of the previous five weeks when increases ranged from 47 to 89.

The number of Western Springs' virus-related deaths remained the same at four, with the last one reported as being on Nov 21. That's a mortality rate of less than 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 58 or older, according to the county medical examiner.

As of Sunday, Western Springs had 53 coronavirus cases per thousand people, better than most of its neighbors. The figure compares to 46.8 in La Grange Park, 50.6 in Darien, 52.7 in Hinsdale, 58.4 in Clarendon Hills, 59.8 in Elmhurst, 60.2 in DuPage County, 65.4 in Burr Ridge, 65.8 in suburban Cook County and 73 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 900,370, up 5.8 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 15,202 state residents.

Nationally, 17.6 million people have caught the virus, up 10 percent from the week before. A total of 315,260 people have died from the virus in the United States.
