Longtime Western Springs Police Chief Dies

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL - Bill "Rip" Rypkema, the Western Springs police chief for two decades, has died. He was 73.

Rypkema died on Monday, July 1 and has services set for Wednesday, July 3.

He was the police chief in Western Springs from 1985 until 2005 and was previously a lieutenant with the Carbondale Police Department in southern Illinois for 16 years before he came to Western Springs, according to the Western Springs Police Department.

He later became president of the West Suburban Chiefs of Police Association and.

The visitation will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Crain Pleasant Grove-Murdale Funeral Home located at 31 Memorial Drive, Murphysboro, Illinois.
