LT’s SAVE Club urges students to Say Something

Lyons Township High School’s SAVE (Students Against Violence Everywhere) Promise Club, in partnership with Sandy Hook Promise, a national non-profit organization led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, is taking part in the National Say Something Week from February 25 through March 1.

Say Something teaches students how to look for warning signs, signals and threats - especially on social media - from individuals who may want to hurt themselves or others and to "say something" to a trusted adult to get them help. When it comes to violence, suicide and threats, most are known by at least one other individual before the incident takes place.

The Say Something call to action week will take place at high schools throughout the country February 25 through March 1. During the week, LT counselors and LT’s SAVE Promise Club will host daily announcements, school-wide activities, optional student training and more.

Daily activities will include the following:

• Monday: Social Media day – students will be encouraged to tweet, share, or post a message encouraging students to recognize warning signs and act.
• Tuesday: Trusted Adult day – All staff and faculty will be given a Trusted Adult name badge sticker.
• Wednesday: Door Ambassador day - Say Something water bottle stickers will be handed out to all students at both campuses.
• Thursday: Sign the Pledge banner – students are asked to sign the banners at each campus which will include the three steps of Say Something.
• Friday: Wear your Say Something shirt - or SAVE Promise Club shirt, which can be purchased through the LT Webstore - or any green shirt. (Green is the color of Sandy Hook Promise)

Say Something Week raises awareness and reinforces the power young people have to prevent tragedies, when they "say something" to a trusted adult to protect a friend from hurting themselves or others.

The Say Something program urges parents to participate in the program and follow important, potentially life-saving strategies at home as well. The SAVE Club has a variety of resources available for parents on the LT SAVE Promise Club webpage.
