Ridgewood's Rusty Tap Water to be Flushed Out Monday

The village plans to flush hydrants in the Ridgewood subdivision Monday to help clear out excess sediment and rust.

If you’re one of the unlucky Ridgewood residents to have noticed cloudy or rusty water recently, help is on the way.

The Western Springs Public Works Department is speeding up its hydrant-flushing program to reach the Ridgewood neighborhood on Monday.

Ridgewood is the farthest subdivision from the village’s water towers, so water doesn’t circulate with as much force through its pipes, the village said.

The result is a greater build-up of sediment and rust than in other areas of the village. The situation was compounded this year because the village didn’t flush its hydrants in 2012 due to the drought and water plant construction.

Water pressure will remain constant through Monday’s flushing, but residents might temporarily experience a little more cloudiness immediately after. If you see sediment, run cold water through the lowest tap in your home until you get a clear flow.
