Slight Percent Hike In New Western Springs Virus Cases
Rate of coronavirus cases in village lower than nearby towns, statistics show.
WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Western Springs saw a slight increase in the percentage of new coronavirus cases in the last week, according to the Cook County Public Health Department.
As of Sunday, Western Springs had 977 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 20 from a week earlier, or a 2.1 percent hike. The week before, the village experienced a 0.7 percent hike.
The number of Western Springs' virus-related deaths remained the same at four, with the last one reported as being on Nov 21, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. That's a mortality rate of less than 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 58 or older, according to the county medical examiner.

As of Sunday, Western Springs had 73.1 coronavirus cases per thousand people, better than most of its neighbors. The figure compares to 69.5 in Darien, 69.8 in La Grange Park, 76.7 in Hinsdale, 78.6 in DuPage County, 79.9 in Elmhurst, 83.6 in Clarendon Hills, 87.2 in suburban Cook County, 91.7 in Burr Ridge and 97.6 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,198,335, up 1 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 20,763 state residents.
Nationally, 28.7 million people have caught the virus, up 1.5 percent from the week before. A total of 521,294 people have died from the virus in the United States.
