Representatives from the Village of Westchester gathered yesterday to break ground on the Village’s 2021 Street and Sewer Lining programs. The projects are the first to be funded by the $42 million in General Obligation Bonds approved by voters in November 2020 for infrastructure improvements across Westchester.

The 2021 Street Program largely focuses on roadway resurfacing, but will also include replacement of curbs, gutters and sidewalks, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant upgrades to sidewalk crossings and drainage improvements to mitigate standing water in roadways. The 2021 Sewer Lining Program will line approximately 10 miles of sanitary and storm sewers, as well as sanitary sewer manholes within the project vicinity.

“Westchester residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of these General Obligation Bonds because they recognize how important it is to invest in our Village’s critical infrastructure,” said Village President Frank Perry. “We’re excited to be able to begin work improving not only the look and feel, but the operation of our roadways and sewer system.”

Roadway and sewer improvements will be made throughout the Village, from north of Roosevelt Road to south of Cermak Road.

The 2021 Street Program is expected to be complete by October 2021.

“Our public works team has designed these projects to minimize impact on residents, while helping to improve the safety and functionality of our roadways,” said Public Works Director Scott Russell. “We’re excited to make these improvements for the benefit of our community.”

At least one lane of traffic will remain open at all times during construction, with the exception of Essex St., which is a full roadway reconstruction. Street parking will be temporarily restricted during construction and residents receiving new driveway aprons will have limited access to the driveways during construction.

Residents with questions or comments throughout the duration of the project can contact Scott Russell at (708) 345-0020.
