Western Springs Attic Transformation Wins Remodeling Award

Hinsdale, IL - An accomplished watercolorist in Western Springs sought out Normandy Designer Terry Tondelli to transform her unfinished attic into a light-filled room to paint and store her work.

Tondelli, who has designing additions down to a fine art, constructed a bright and open space that not only met the homeowner’s creative needs, but received a Remodeling Excellence Award by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) of Greater Chicagoland.

Prior to renovating, the attic had low ceilings and was primarily used to store family mementos. To transform this attic into an art studio, Tondelli first addressed the lack of head room. A large dormer was built to add height and allow for large windows, bringing in an abundance of natural light.

“Providing ample lighting was important for the homeowner’s creative process,” Tondelli said. “We also added a combination of recessed cans and track lighting so that she could control the lighting conditions within the room.”

In addition to lighting, Tondelli also utilized built-ins to store paintings and supplies and worked in surface space to store canvases. Details such as baseboards, flooring and window casings also convert this attic space into a beautiful extension of the home.

Tondelli’s attic addition was one of 21 designs recognized for remodeling excellence. Recipients of NARI Remodeling Excellence Awards were evaluated by an impartial panel of judges, comprised of industry experts. The judging criteria included problem solving, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation and degree of difficulty.

“Overall, I am happy to have provided my client with a useful and well-designed space,” said Tondelli. “However, it is also extremely rewarding to be recognized by my peers within the remodeling industry.”
