Western Springs Sees Big Drop In Virus Rate: County

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Western Springs' coronavirus rate took a big dip in the last week.

As of Sunday, Western Springs had 1,319 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 17 from a week earlier, or a 1.3 percent hike, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. The week before, the village experienced a 3.3 percent increase.

The number of Western Springs' virus-related deaths increased by one in the last week, to six. The latest deaths were reported May 31, May 11 and Nov. 21, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. That's a mortality rate of less than 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 53 or older, according to the county medical examiner.

Here is how Western Springs' coronavirus cases have accumulated since the pandemic's beginning:

As of Sunday, Western Springs had 98.7 coronavirus cases per thousand people since the pandemic's beginning. The figure compares to 81.5 in Darien, 88.1 in La Grange Park, 91.4 in DuPage County, 93.2 in Hinsdale, 94 in Elmhurst, 99.6 in Clarendon Hills, 101.8 in suburban Cook County, 104.2 in Burr Ridge and 120.8 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,385,245, up 0.3 percent from a week earlier, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 22,949.

Nationally, 33.2 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, up 0.3 percent from the week before, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 594,381 people have died from the virus in the United States.
