Western Springs Sees Drop In Virus Rate: County

The village experienced hikes the three weeks before.

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Western Springs saw a decrease in its coronavirus case rate last week, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. The three previous weeks, it saw hikes in its rate.

As of Sunday, Western Springs had 1,177 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 33 from a week earlier, or a 2.9 percent hike. The week before, the village experienced a 3.4 percent increase.

The number of Western Springs' virus-related deaths remained the same at four, with the last one reported as being on Nov 21, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. That's a mortality rate of less than 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 58 or older, according to the county medical examiner.

As of Sunday, Western Springs had 88.1 coronavirus cases per thousand people since the pandemic's beginning, better than most of its neighbors. The figure compares to 77.8 in Darien, 80.7 in La Grange Park, 87.4 in DuPage County, 88.4 in Hinsdale, 90.4 in Elmhurst, 95.7 in Clarendon Hills, 96.3 in suburban Cook County, 100.8 in Burr Ridge and 111.6 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,321,033, up 1.7 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 21,826 state residents.

Nationally, 31.8 million people have caught the virus, up 1.3 percent from the week before. A total of 568,237 people have died from the virus in the United States.
