Western Springs Sees Increase In Virus Rate: County

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — A week ago, Western Springs saw the lowest weekly rate of new coronavirus cases in months. This last week, the rate increased, according to the Cook County Public Health Department.

As of Sunday, Western Springs had 1,227 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 27 from a week earlier, or a 2.3 percent hike. The week before, the village experienced a 0.8 percent increase.

The number of Western Springs' virus-related deaths increased by one in the last week, to five. The latest death was reported May 11. The most recent one before that was Nov. 21, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. That's a mortality rate of less than 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 58 or older, according to the county medical examiner.

Here is how Western Springs' coronavirus cases have accumulated since the pandemic's beginning:

As of Sunday, Western Springs had 91.8 coronavirus cases per thousand people since the pandemic's beginning. The figure compares to 80.3 in Darien, 84.1 in La Grange Park, 90.1 in DuPage County, 91.7 in Hinsdale, 93 in Elmhurst, 98.8 in Clarendon Hills, 99.9 in suburban Cook County, 102.7 in Burr Ridge and 116.2 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,363,507, up 0.7 percent from a week earlier. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 22,369.

Nationally, 32.7 million people have caught the virus, up 0.7 percent from the week before. A total of 581,573 people have died from the virus in the United States.
