Western Springs Virus Rate Higher Than Most Places

National and state rates are considerably less than the village's.

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — The United States and Illinois saw increases in coronavirus rates of less than 1 percent in the last week. Such was the case with most suburbs. But not Western Springs.

As of Sunday, Western Springs had 1,302 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 41 from a week earlier, or a 3.3 percent hike, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. Darien, with a population more than 50 percent larger than that of Western Springs, saw eight new coronavirus cases in the last week.

The week before, the village experienced a 2.8 percent increase.

The number of Western Springs' virus-related deaths stayed the same in last week, at five. The latest deaths were reported May 11 and Nov. 21, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. That's a mortality rate of less than 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 58 or older, according to the county medical examiner.

As of Sunday, Western Springs had 97.5 coronavirus cases per thousand people since the pandemic's beginning. The figure compares to 81 in Darien, 87.3 in La Grange Park, 90.1 in DuPage County, 92.6 in Hinsdale, 93.8 in Elmhurst, 99.2 in Clarendon Hills, 101.5 in suburban Cook County, 103.9 in Burr Ridge and 119.8 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,381,665, up 0.4 percent from a week earlier. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 22,794.

Nationally, 33.1 million people have caught the virus, up 0.5 percent from the week before. A total of 590,959 people have died from the virus in the United States.
