Western Springs Virus Rate Higher Than State's

The village's number of deaths from the coronavirus stays the same in the last week.

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Western Springs' weekly coronavirus rate was considerably higher than the state's in the last week.

As of Sunday, Western Springs had 1,261 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 34 from a week earlier, or a 2.8 percent hike. That's higher than the statewide rate increase of 0.7 percent. Darien, with a population more than 50 percent larger than that of Western Springs, saw nine new coronavirus cases in the last week.

The week before, the village experienced a 0.3 percent increase.

The number of Western Springs' virus-related deaths stayed the same in last week, at five. The latest deaths were reported May 11 and Nov. 21, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. That's a mortality rate of less than 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 58 or older, according to the county medical examiner.

As of Sunday, Western Springs had 94.4 coronavirus cases per thousand people since the pandemic's beginning. The figure compares to 80.7 in Darien, 85.3 in La Grange Park, 90.1 in DuPage County, 92.4 in Hinsdale, 93.4 in Elmhurst, 99.1 in Clarendon Hills, 100.8 in suburban Cook County, 103.7 in Burr Ridge and 117.9 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,375,808, up 0.9 percent from a week earlier. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 22,623.

Nationally, 32.9 million people have caught the virus, up 0.7 percent from the week before. A total of 586,535 people have died from the virus in the United States.
