Why Are There 2 Christmas Trees At Western Springs Tower Green?
Village's longtime public works staff explains the history behind the trees.
WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Some residents are asking about the history behind the "very different" Christmas trees on Western Springs' Tower Green, according to a village Facebook post Tuesday.
So village officials went to longtime public works staff to figure out what happened. According to the staff, for many years, the village set up a large live tree that was crane-lifted into a hole stand on the Tower Green, a hole that still exists under a manhole lid.
"Eventually, the idea was hatched to use the flagpole to create a tree of streaming green lights in place of the annual live tree," the village said in the Facebook post. "As the years passed, the little pine tree next to the flagpole grew, and grew, and it was decided to light that one up as well."
