Gallery and More Coverage: Iowa City Rallies to Celebrate Supreme Court DOMA Decision

Gay rights advocates gathered on the University of Iowa Pentacrest to celebrate the ruling that struck down the federal ban on gay marriage, giving already married couples in Iowa federal rights.

Iowa City gay rights advocates were preparing for "a party, a wake, or a riot" depending on the outcome of today's United States Supreme Court ruling that would determine if marriages made here in Iowa would be recognized on the national level.

The result (if you haven't heard already): they were partying in Iowa City tonight after the court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act.

Over 200 jubilant celebrants and casual observers, political figures and married couples, media members and social media documenters gathered on the Pentacrest lawn near the University of Iowa Capitol building to mark the event, listen to speeches, mourn for the advocates who didn't live to see the day, and throb along to dance remixes.

"Alright, we're going to alternate, do you want to listen to another speech next or dance?" asked one of the speakers as they finished their tribute for the day.

"Dance!" came the call from the audience.

"Alright, let's do it!" came the reply.

And they alternated into the night, waving plentiful rainbow flags as the sun set slowly over the Capitol Dome on this humid June evening.
