Man Sentenced to 8 Years for Dealing Crack Cocaine in Iowa City And Other Locations

Jeffrey Goins and Bryant Smith have been convicted in the case in which they were accused of stuffing drugs in luggage on a Greyhound bus line.

A former Iowa City resident convicted of selling crack-cocaine in the Iowa City area and other locations has been sentenced to eight years and four months in prison. 

Jeffrey Goins, 26, was sentenced on Thursday by United States District Judge John A. Jarvey to 100 months in prison for conspiracy to distribute 280 grams or more of cocaine base, according to a news release from United States Attorney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt.

Goins was also ordered to serve five years of supervised release following the imprisonment, and to pay $100 towards the Crime Victims Fund.

According to the news release, beginning approximately June 2010 and continuing until about March 2, 2012, Goins conspired with others to distribute cocaine base or crack cocaine in the Iowa City, Iowa, area and other locations.

The Quad City Times reported in November that Goins and another man, Bryant Smith, were involved in the case in which drugs were stuffed inside luggage on a Greyhound bus line from Chicago to Iowa City. 

Records state that Davenport police began an investigation after intercepting about 90 grams of crack cocaine, 128 grams of powder cocaine and marijuana on Jan. 4 on a Greyhound bus bound from Chicago to Iowa City.

In approximately August 2011, Goins and co-defendant Bryant Smith began distributing drugs together and utilized passenger bus lines to transport drugs from Chicago, Illinois, to Iowa City for resale.

On January 4, 2012, police in Davenport, Iowa, intercepted about 90 grams of crack cocaine, 128 grams of powder cocaine, and marijuana secreted in luggage on a bus bound from Chicago to Iowa City. Investigation revealed that the luggage belonged to Javon Daniels, a passenger on the bus, who was transporting the drugs on behalf of Goins and Smith. On February 8, 2013, co-defendant Bryan Smith was sentenced to 140 months in prison to be followed by five years of supervised release. On September 14, 2012, Javon Daniels was sentenced to 40 months in prison to be followed by four years of supervised release for possession with intent to distribute 28 grams or more of crack cocaine.

This case was investigated by the Davenport, Iowa, Police Department, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Iowa City, Iowa, Police Department, and the case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
