Tips For Storm Debris Cleanup In Iowa City

Storms rolled through Iowa City Monday, Sept. 9, 2019, bringing with them wind and rain that knocked down tree branches and limbs throughout the City.

Forestry staff is not able to remove debris on private property. Homeowners and landlords are advised to contact a private tree company if assistance is needed.

Residents can report downed trees and large branches impacting the public right-of-way using the ICgovXpress mobile app, online at www.icgov.org/ICgovXpress, or by calling 319-356-5000.

Yard waste is accepted at the Iowa City Landfill

Residents can haul storm debris to the yard waste facility at the Iowa City Landfill, 3900 Hebl Ave. Hours are 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Yard waste must be separated from trash and cannot go into the landfill per state law. The yard waste section of the Landfill is clearly marked for disposal, and staff is available onsite to direct people who have questions.

Curbside customers can also place woody debris at the curb for pick up on their normal collection day. To fit in the trucks, woody debris and brush must meet the following requirements.

Woody debris placed at the curb must:

• Branches, sticks must be four inches in diameter or less
• Must be securely tied in bundles that are no bigger around than 18 inches, and no more than 48 inches long
• Must weigh less than 50 pounds

Any brush not meeting the specifications listed above will be left at the curb. To learn more, visit www.icgov.org/organics.
