IOWA CITY, IA --Â Johnson County officials said they planned to increase the outflow from the Coralville Dam to 17,000 cfs (cubic feet per second).
The move is intended to make more room in the reservoir to help curb flooding. In Iowa City and surrounding areas, those close to the Iowa River are scrambling to build sandbag walls or move their belongings to higher ground.
President Barack Obama has declared Johnson County, and several other Iowa counties, a flood disaster area.
