Carlos Jose and Airport Security

Helpful Tips For Making Your Next Trip Through Louis Armstrong Airport A Pleasant Experience

Flying in and out of New Orleans can be quite an experience. After all, the international Louis Armstrong airport is one of the largest in the region. In April of this year, for instance, it had more than half a million scheduled domestic flights. Meaning, the number of passengers that utilize it daily is counted in the tens of thousands. And although the airport is a sight to be seen in itself, it comes with many security restrictions.

Traveling via air is arguably the most convenient way of covering large distances in a short period of time. It is also one of the most heavily secured ventures in the world. In order to pass the initial checkpoints, all airports scan every single bag that is presented. Furthermore, a lot of popular location require people to go through control where shoes and other items are taken off. Given Louis Armstrong airport's proximity to New Orleans, one might be tempted to look outside the window for hours. This, however, should also include an occasional glance around the airport itself. Many unfortunate events that occur at heavy-traffic venues are often not detected due to a lack of attention to detail. Consider, for example, how one may react if they see an unattended bag. For most travelers, such occurrence may not seem out of the ordinary. Everyone has some type of luggage and seeing bags sitting around is not uncommon at airports, right?

Actually, no. Unattended bags are one of the most important red flags when it comes to suspicious activities. Due to dangers of potential bombs, airports like the one in New Orleans are very aware of all items left unattended. For new travelers, this means never separating from one's things. Doing so could turn into a security issue where authorities are alarmed. As a consequence, delays may take place and one might even become a subject of an investigation. Also, those who do notice bags left alone should report it to someone in charge. This can either be a security agent or even a worker in the nearby restaurant.

Only Bring Approved Items

Carlos Jose, a former Assistant Director of Facilities Management for the Miami-Dade County, stresses the importance of luggage content. Most people don’t check ahead of time to see what items are allowed. For instance, in 2017, the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) confiscated almost 4,000 handguns. All of them came from travelers who failed to adhere to the protocols and properly secure their weapons. The same applies to the international airport in New Orleans.

Thus, people who will be getting on a plane must know that certain items cannot be brought. Some of them are quite obvious and take no explanation. For example, bringing large batteries can be a hazard as the cabin's pressure may cause explosions. Some, however, are not as obvious. Just consider that most providers prohibit any liquids over 100 milligrams in hand luggage. So, the easiest way to get around potential problems is to know the policies and obey them.

Paying Attention to Instructions

When going to a flight that departs from New Orleans, one is bound to face TSA agents. These are the individuals who ensure that everyone is safe and no prohibited items are brought on board. For travelers, they are also the people that will guide them through metal detectors and inspect passports. Naturally, obeying any and all requests that they make is essential to safety. According to former Assistant Director of Facilities Management Carlos Jose, however, there are those who do not take these simple rules seriously.

For example, even joking while in front of a TSA agent can cause serious concerns. That is why it is necessary to maintain a professional attitude and be straightforward with the agent. Ultimately, they are the best source of information for those who might be confused about anything. Not to mention how important it is to notify the closest agent about any suspicious activity. Doing so could prevent disasters and help the authorities take control of the situation as soon as possible.
