Shreve Memorial Library invites the public to join two important conversations about civil rights.  This April, the library will discuss issues of civil rights both historically and currently in two engaging virtual events – The Unique Context of Contemporary Civil Rights Advocacy on April 8 and The Role of Education in the Struggle for Civil Rights on April 29. Both programs will take place at 6:00 p.m. via Zoom.  These events are free to the public. However, registration is required.

The first program, “The Unique Context of Contemporary Civil Rights Advocacy,” is presented by Jeri Hilt of the North Louisiana Civil Rights Coalition and will take place on Thursday, April 8 at 6:00 p.m. Hilt will examine current civil rights advocacy trends, issues and events. The discussion is presented in partnership with The North Louisiana Civil Rights Coalition (NLCRC). The NLCRC provides educational research, collection of civil rights data and collaboration with high schools, higher education, government, churches and other community organizations.  For more information about the NLCRC, please visit https://nlcrc.org/.

Dr. Raymond Hicks will present “The Role of Education in the Struggle for Civil Rights.” Dr. Hicks will moderate the program and give a synopsis of the role education plays in the civil rights struggle, examining how racism and segregation are issues still faced today. The program was originally planned as part of the library’s Black History Month celebration, but had to be rescheduled due to winter storms. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 29.
