PORTLAND, ME — A hospital in Portland is about to experience a baby boom. A dozen nurses at Maine Medical Center are pregnant, and while that may not seem unusual in a metropolitan area of 513,000, this is: Nine of the pregnant nurses work in the hospital’s labor and delivery unit.

The babies are expected to arrive between April and July, according to a news release on the hospital’s website. Eight of the nine pregnant women gathered recently for a photo showing off their baby bumps and shared it on social media, where it got considerable traction and adoring comments.

Registered nurse Erin Grenier was the first of the women to announce her pregnancy. When the fourth of her colleagues said she, too, was expecting a baby, Grenier “started wondering if something really was in the air” on the L&D floor.

“I guess I started a trend!” Grenier said.

The other RNs are, in order of their due dates, Rachel Stellmach, Brittney Verville, Lonnie Soucie, Amanda Spear, Samantha Giglio, Nicole Goldberg, Nicole Barnes, and Holly Selby.

“Everywhere we look, there’s someone who’s an expert!” Spear said in the release.
Some of the nurses will be first-time moms, but others are expecting their second, third and fourth babies. But all are prepared for what’s ahead of them because of their experience working together to help other mothers deliver their children, the release said.

Being pregnant together has further bonded the close-knit group.

“I think it’s comforting knowing we’re all in this together,” Giglio said.

And here’s something else that’s coincidental: Six of the nurses work the same weekend shift. The hospital said it has planned for shift coverage while they’re on maternity leave.

The nurses plan to get together with their babies for another group photo in the fall.
