UCU Unveils Renovations to Rangeley Road, Union Street Branches
As part of a multi-year effort to upgrade its branches statewide, UCU unveils renovations in Orono and Bangor.
BANGOR and ORONO, Maine - As part of a multi-year effort to upgrade its branches statewide, University Credit Union recently unveiled the final phase of renovations to its 139 Rangeley Road, Orono and 977 Union Street, Bangor locations.
Opened in 1988, Rangeley Road was UCU’s first-ever standalone branch, and their first to feature an automated teller machine (ATM). UCU was founded in 1967 in the basement of Coburn Hall on the University of Maine campus, initially to serve University of Maine employees.
Once the credit union opened membership in 1987 to University of Maine alumni, as well as anyone living or working in the town of Orono, it became clear that a standalone branch was necessary to offer its then-4,000 members the best possible service.

In 2002, UCU expanded further with the opening of its Bangor branch at 977 Union Street. The branch has since been upgraded with wider drive-up lanes, two new video teller machines (ITM), a repaved parking lot, and extensive interior renovations to improve the look and feel of the branch while providing the best possible service to members.
Today, UCU is one of Maine’s largest full-service financial institutions, serving more than 28,000 University of Maine System students, employees, alumni and their families from eight locations in southern, central, and northern Maine. Since opening its doors 52 years ago, UCU has remained true to its roots in education through investments in financial literacy programs and technologies, products, and services that actively advance the financial wellbeing of members at every stage of life.
