The property was owned by the Society of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart, the only congregation in the American Catholic Church dedicated to the African-American community. The Calvert Street property housed the organization's headquarters, including its archive. Now the society operates on West Lake Avenue in north Baltimore at St. Joseph's Manor.
