97 Degrees On Heat Index Possible In MD Sunday, Officials Say

An air quality alert was issued by the National Weather Service, and temperatures may climb toward triple digits in Maryland Sunday.

MARYLAND — Heat indices may climb toward 100 degrees Sunday in Maryland, according to the National Weather Service. An air quality alert has also been issued for the Baltimore metro area, and a heat advisory has been issued east of Maryland.

Urban areas including Baltimore and Washington, D.C., are slated to see temperatures hit 94 and 95 degrees, respectively, with conditions making it feel like 97 degrees on Sunday.

The hottest point in the day is likely to be from 2 to 5 p.m., based on the forecast.

Here are tips to keep cool in the heat:

  • Drink water.
  • Put on sunscreen.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Do not leave animals or children alone in vehicles.

Hot, humid weather is expected to continue into the middle of the week.

East of Cecil County, parts of Delaware and the Philadelphia metropolitan area are under a heat advisory from noon to 8 p.m. calling for temperatures of 96 to 100 degrees on the heat index in the afternoon and early evening. In urbanized areas, officials say high humidity levels and hot temperatures could cause heat-related health issues, especially for older adults and those with preexisting health conditions.

  • 11 a.m. — 86 degrees (89 on heat index)
  • 12 p.m. — 90 degrees (93 on heat index)
  • 1 p.m. — 93 degrees (95 on heat index)
  • 2 p.m. — 94 degrees (97 on heat index)
  • 3 p.m. —94 degrees (96 on heat index)
  • 4 p.m. — 94 degrees (96 on heat index)
  • 5 p.m. — 94 degrees (97 on heat index)
  • 6 p.m. — 92 degrees. (94 on heat index)
  • 7 p.m. — 89 degrees (92 on heat index)
  • 8 p.m. — 87 degrees (89 on heat index)

Code Orange Air Quality Alert

The Maryland Department of the Environment has issued a code orange air quality alert Sunday for the Baltimore metro area.

Under "code orange," air pollution concentrations may be hazardous for children, older adults, people with asthma, those suffering from heart disease and people with lung disease.

To avoid the impacts of air pollution, these people should avoid strenuous activity and steer clear of exercising outside.

The air quality alert applies to the following: Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Cecil, Harford and Howard counties as well as Baltimore City.
