​Daily Record Names Steve Sharkey as Very Important Professional

The Daily Record created the VIP List in 2011 to recognize professionals 40 years of age and younger who have been successful in Maryland.

From the Daily Record: The Daily Record has named Steve Sharkey, Director of the Department of General Services, to the 2017 VIP List — Very Important Professionals Successful by 40 awards.

The Daily Record created the VIP List in 2011 to recognize professionals 40 years of age and younger who have been successful in Maryland. Winners, chosen by a panel of previous VIP List honorees and business leaders, were selected on the basis of professional accomplishments, community service and commitment to inspiring change.

Director Steve Sharkey lives in Locust Point with his wife and two daughters. He began his service to the City of Baltimore as an intern 13 years ago, and has served as Director of the Department of General Services (DGS) since 2013. In the years he has worked for the City of Baltimore, he has worked diligently to improve City Government. Sharkey is an inspiring leader who promotes team unity as he articulates a transformative vision. Through careful administrative oversight, financial responsibility, and innovative executive management, Mr. Sharkey has successfully made quantifiable improvements to the functionality of the municipal government.

“Steve Sharkey is dedicated to finding savings by making our buildings and fleet vehicles more cost-effective and efficient,” said Mayor Catherine E. Pugh. “He is extremely deserving of this honor having dedicated himself to improving government for the citizens of Baltimore.”

Sharkey has managed more than three hundred forty employees while improving operational efficiency in fleet management, facilities maintenance, and capital design and construction. By initiating a bi-weekly accountability review with top managers, he has overseen a sixty-percent increase in on-time contract vendor payments while simultaneously reducing a building maintenance backlog. Also, by introducing better financial tracking measures, the agency has come in under its budget allocation four consecutive years.
“I am very humbled by this award, thank you to The Daily Record and to my strong, dedicated team at DGS” Director Sharkey said. “I love Baltimore and am driven to make life a little easier for the citizens of this great City.”

The other VIP winners will be honored Sept. 13 at a reception starting at 5:30 p.m. at Gertrude's at the Baltimore Museum of Art, 10 Art Museum Drive in Baltimore. The winners will be profiled in a special section that will be inserted into the September 14 issue of The Daily Record and available online at www.TheDailyRecord.com.
