No Coronavirus Deaths Reported Oct. 1 In Maryland, Officials Say

The Maryland Department of Health reported no coronavirus deaths Thursday, the first time that happened since March.

BALTIMORE, MD — Seven months into the coronavirus pandemic, the Maryland Department of Health reported Thursday, Oct. 1, that there were no deaths from the virus in the last day. The last time zero new deaths were reported in the day-to-day coronavirus tallies from state health officials was in March.

The first deaths in Maryland from COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, were reported March 18. As of Thursday, state health officials say 3,805 Marylanders have died from COVID-19.

"Today, for the first time since March 28, the State of Maryland is reporting zero new coronavirus deaths," Gov. Larry Hogan said in a statement. "This encouraging milestone is a tribute to the incredibly heroic efforts of our doctors, nurses, and health care workers on the front lines, and the courage and perseverance Marylanders have demonstrated in response to this unprecedented challenge."

Of the 3,800 who have died, officials say 2,172 — or about 57 percent — have been in or worked in congregate living settings. Montgomery County has had the most deaths from COVID-19, with 810, according to state health data.

In the past day, Montgomery County has added one to its death toll, and it is unclear how that factors into the state's zero-death report for Thursday. Patch has asked the Maryland Department of Health for comment on the issue and will update this article.

"We have lost more than 3,800 of our fellow Marylanders to this virus, and we mourn with their families," Hogan said Thursday. "As we continue on our road to recovery, it is absolutely critical for all of us to remain vigilant."

Those at increased risk from the virus are older adults and those with certain underlying medical conditions. Of the 3,805 Marylanders who have died from COVID-19, nearly 87 percent were at least 60 years old. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 80 percent of those nationwide who have died from COVID-19 were 65 and older.

Those who have the virus may experience the following mild to severe symptoms between two and 14 days of exposure, according to the CDC:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

There are 125,510 confirmed cases of the virus in Maryland, where officials say 331 infected people are hospitalized Thursday, including 74 on the intensive care unit. In the past day, 785 new cases were added in Maryland.

The statewide positivity rate over the past seven days is 2.88 percent, according to the Maryland Department of Health.
