Rombauer Wins Preakness Stakes

BALTIMORE, MD — A horse whose odds of winning were 12-1 before the Preakness Stakes swept up the win Saturday night in Baltimore for the second jewel in the Triple Crown.

Rombauer swooped in behind Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit and Preakness favorite Midnight Bourbon in the final 10 seconds of the race, which spanned about 1 minute and 53 seconds.

Rombauer was bred in Kentucky and qualified for the Preakness by winning the El Camino Real Derby in California in February, according to the Los Angeles Times.

About 10,000 fans were permitted at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, as the event was planned before the state and city lifted capacity restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Watch the race, which was broadcast by NBC Sports. Post time was 6:47 p.m. Saturday, May 15, and the national broadcast started at 5 p.m.

Earlier in the week, Medina Spirit was cleared by the Maryland Jockey Club to run in the race, after his Kentucky Derby win was called into question when he failed a post-race drug test, prompting the suspension of trainer Bob Baffert from Churchill Downs.

Baffert will not be in attendance at the Preakness, CBS News reported. According to the news station, he did not want to take the focus off the 1.1875-mile race in Baltimore.

He agreed to several conditions set forth by the Maryland Jockey Club, including additional testing of his horses, to participate in this weekend's races at Pimlico.

His other horse running the 146th Preakness Stakes — Concert Tour — is among the contenders with the best odds of winning.

Baffert trained Justify in 2018 and American Pharaoh in 2015, who had both won the Kentucky Derby before winning the Preakness Stakes, according to the Associated Press. He has trained seven Preakness winners in total.

Due to the coronavirus, the Preakness Stakes was postponed to Oct. 3 last year, when Swiss Skydiver became the sixth filly in race history to win the Preakness.
