Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued For 3 Counties Plus Baltimore

BREAKING: The National Weather Service has placed some parts of the region under a severe thunderstorm warning.

MARYLAND — A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for parts of the Baltimore metro area until 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, July 1.

Officials issued the warning after a severe thunderstorm with 60 mph winds and quarter-sized hail was detected near Historic Ellicott City after 2:30 p.m. The storm was moving east at 35 mph, according to authorities.

During the severe thunderstorm warning period, winds may cause trees and large branches to fall, injuring people outside as well as damaging homes and vehicles. Roads could become blocked by fallen trees, and power outages are possible. People should go inside to the lowest floor and an interior room to stay safe.

The severe thunderstorm warning applies to the following:

  • Anne Arundel County
  • Baltimore City
  • Baltimore County
  • Howard County

These areas may be impacted, according to the severe thunderstorm warning: Baltimore, Columbia, Pikesville, Middle River, Elkridge, Sparrows Point, Back River, Historic Ellicott City, Glen Burnie, Ellicott City, Dundalk, Towson, Catonsville, Essex, Woodlawn, Randallstown, Parkville, Carney, Milford Mill and Perry Hall.

In addition, radar indicated a severe thunderstorm northwest of Annapolis that was moving east, prompting a special warning for boaters.

With gusty winds and high waves expected, boaters should move to safe harbor immediately so their vessels do not capsize or get damaged, officials advised.

These areas may be impacted: Kent Narrows Bridge, Magothy River, Chester River, Eastern Bay, Greenbury Point, Highland Beach, Sandy Point State Park, Severn River, Bloody Point Light, Thomas Point Light, Parsons Island, Pinehurst, Gibson Island, Bodkin Point, Miles River, Love Point, Naval Academy, Baltimore Light, Romancoke and Matapeake.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday, due to the possibility of storms with damaging winds. A flash flood watch is in effect until 8 a.m. Friday for the region as well.
