These 7 Maryland Hospitals Are Among The Best In U.S.: Newsweek
Newsweek's best hospital rankings for 2021 include over 300 hospitals in the United States. Maryland has 7 hospitals on the list.
MARYLAND — Several Maryland hospitals were ranked among the best in America by Newsweek, with one health-care facility making the list's top 5.
The magazine’s “World’s Best Hospitals” list for 2021 ranked the top hospitals around the world, including in the United States. It’s the third year Newsweek has published the list, for which it partnered with the data firm Statista.
Seven Maryland hospitals ranked among the top 200 in the U.S., while another two hospitals were included in the overall list but did not rank among the top 200.

Here’s how Maryland hospitals were ranked on the list:
- The Johns Hopkins Hospital of Baltimore, No. 4
- University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, No. 68
- Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, No. 80
- Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, No. 121
- Saint Joseph Medical Center in Towson, No. 161
- MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore, No. 245
- MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, No. 257
In its methodology, Newsweek explained that it looked at three data sources to compile the rankings: recommendations from medical experts, results from patient surveys and medical KPIs on hospitals.

These are the top 10 hospitals in the United States, according to Newsweek.
- Mayo Clinic - Rochester in Rochester, MN
- Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio
- Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston
- The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore
- Stanford Health Care - Stanford Hospital in Stanford, CA
- Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles
- The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, NY
- University of Michigan Hospitals - Michigan Medicine in Ann Arbor, MI
- Brigham And Women's Hospital in Boston
- New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell in New York, NY
Hospitals in the U.S. were also recognized for infection prevention if they performed above the national average based on data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
These three Maryland hospitals were recognized by Newsweek for infection prevention:
- The Johns Hopkins Hospital of Baltimore
- Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore
- Saint Joseph Medical Center in Towson

Methodology:
The World's Best Hospital ranking lists are based on three data sources: Recommendations from medical experts (doctors, hospitals managers, health care professionals); results from patient surveys; medical KPIs on hospitals.
U.S. hospitals were also awarded as best hospitals for infection prevention if they performed above the national average based on six different measures. This recognition is based on data from Jan. 1, 2019, to Dec. 31. 2019, published by CMS.
