MARYLAND — Winter weather that could put parts of the state at a standstill is in the forecast this week, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a winter storm watch.

The Baltimore-Washington area is under a winter storm watch Thursday through Friday morning. Travel may be almost impossible during the watch period, officials say.

At least 5 inches of snow could fall, and up to half an inch of ice may accumulate, officials say.

Ice may lead to power outages and tree damage, according to the watch. The morning or evening commute could be affected.

These areas are under the winter storm watch from 3 a.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday:

  • Anne Arundel County
  • Baltimore City
  • Baltimore County
  • Carroll County
  • Cecil County
  • Charles County
  • Harford County
  • Howard County
  • Montgomery County
  • Prince George's County

The National Weather Service issues a winter storm watch within 24 hours to signal the potential for hazardous winter weather to the public. It is not a guarantee.

In Frederick and Washington counties, a separate winter storm watch says ice accumulation from freezing rain could occur late Thursday through Thursday night.

Garrett and Allegany counties are under a separate winter storm watch from midnight Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday calling for significant snow accumulations of at least 5 inches.
