LOS ANGELES, CA — A Maryland man made it to the top six on "American Idol" but could not eke his way into the top five. Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon, 26, of Catonsville, was eliminated after the episode of the ABC show on Sunday, May 5.

He performed Barbra Streisand's "Somewhere," showcasing his powerful vocal cords with expert coaching from singer Lauren Daigle, who encouraged him to practice a cappella.

The "American Idol" judges described Harmon's delivery as "incredible," "mesmerizing" and "great," but that was not enough.

Harmon was one of two contestants without sufficient public votes to advance to the next round.

"Jeremiah, you started a little unsure," judge Luke Bryan said. "Man, as a performer, that happens ... but way to rally and then from halfway through the song 'til the end was just incredible."

Judge Lionel Richie disagreed, saying: "You killed it tonight," after Harmon finished.

"You've got such a big voice," Judge Katie Perry said. "I was locked in every single word, every single syllable. You did so great."

Host Ryan Seacrest delivered the bad news, that four of the singers would move on to the next round; and Harmon and Laci Kaye Booth, 23, were poised to leave.

But the Idol judges exercised their veto power to "save" one singer, deciding that Booth would be moving on to the top five next week.

"Someday, somewhere is going to be a star," American Idol tweeted during the show.

Harmon is a music teacher from Catonsville whose background also included a stint as a church janitor. He is a student at Towson University who took the semester off to be on the show.

Throughout his journey on "American Idol," Harmon has captivated audiences with his story of the struggle to attain acceptance from his family after coming out as a homosexual.

The next episode of "American Idol" when the public can vote for their favorite finalists will be on ABC at 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 12.

These are the remaining six finalists:

  • Alejandro Aranda, 24, of Pomona, California
  • Laci Kaye Booth, 23, of Livingston, Texas
  • Wade Cota, 27, of Phoenix, Arizon
  • Laine Hardy, 18, of Livingston, Louisiana
  • Madison Vandenburg, 17, of Cahoes, New York
