"Prom?" It's a Question Worthy of Ceremony for Catonsville Students

It's not quite getting down on one knee, but students at Catonsville High School have joined a trend--creative prom date invitations.

For some Catonsville students, it's not enough to politely ask someone to the prom.

The 's junior prom is Saturday and the senior prom is May 19. Students interviewed by Patch said that while many of their peers still just offer casual invitations, there's more pressure these days to come up with something creative.

Junior DeAndre Lane wanted to do something special for his girlfriend and was brainstorming with his mother for ideas. After searching the Internet, they came up with the idea of spelling out "Prom?" with lit tealights on the floor in his home.

After a last-minute conflict prevented his girlfriend from arriving at Lane's house for the big reveal, Lane posted the photo on Facebook for all to see.

She said yes.

"She wasn't expecting it," Lane said of his plan. "I just wanted to do something special."

Fellow Junior Justin Sprankle also wanted to wow his date, even though she is a close friend.

While most of his friends extended traditional invitations, Sprankle estimated about a fourth started stepping up their game.

"If you get creative, you can have fun with it," he said.

Sprankle purchased chocolate-covered strawberries from Edible Arrangements and then had the letters "Prom" and a question mark spelled out in white icing on each strawberry.

He presented the box to his potential date. Another yes ensued.

It's not just guys who are getting creative.

On a recent Sunday, junior Emma Liebegott was visiting a friend's house, which happened to be two streets from where her potential date lived. Feeling spontaneous, the two gathered some Post-it notes and wrote one word of the phrase, "Will you go to prom with me? -Emma" on each note.

They went to the potential date's house and stuck the notes on his car. His answer was also, pause for effect, yes.
