BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — UMBC made history Friday night, squashing the Virginia Cavaliers in a major upset, 74-54. To say the UMBC Retrievers were underdogs would be an understatement; no Number-16 seed has ever upset a basketball team in the top slot in an NCAA tournament.
The buzz around UMBC was so great that its website crashed Friday night.
The fans went wild as the buzzer sounded after 11:30 p.m. at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, where the Retrievers ended the Cavaliers' season in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Heading into the game, "major upset" and "surreal" were used to describe the UMBC Retrievers win over the University of Vermont Catamounts over the weekend; that win set them up for entry into the NCAA tournament.
