Voters Head to the Polls in Catonsville

Area media outlets report a light turnout, but some Republican voters say they feel like their vote counts more this year.

While election judges and media outlets are reporting that voting is light across Maryland, Catonsville voters said they feel that this year their vote may count more.

With no Republican candidate accumulating enough delegates to be chosen as the party's nominee, some Republicans said they were more excited to vote this year than in prior years.

Catonsville resident Linda Judson came to vote at with her daughter Alyssa, who was voting for the first time.

Both of them voted for Mitt Romney. Alyssa, who is a senior at , was particulary passionate about the candidate. Her enthusiasm had inspired her mother, who said this was the first time in a while she had been this excited to vote Republican.

"I don't think he'll just vote the party line," Alyssa said, citing his leadership in Massachusetts as an example of a Republican who thinks outside the box.

The two said they were excited for a candidate like Romney, because he's more moderate.

Carol and Ed Zeller, who did early voting last week, said they felt their vote mattered more this year. Carol voted for Rick Santorum, while Ed voted for Romney.

Santorum, Carol said, was the truer conservative candidate.

"He's a strong conservative," she said. "I think we need someone to get us out of debt and get this country on the right track."

Ed said his vote was cast for Romney because his moderate credentials would increase his chances of defeating President Barack Obama in the general election.

The head of the Maryland State State Board of Elections told the Baltimore Sun that turnout was predicted to be 25 percent.
