The severe thunderstorm warning lasts until 6:30 p.m. Damaging winds will cause some trees and large branches to fall. This could injure anyone who is outdoors, and damage homes and vehicles. Roads may become blocked by downed trees. Localized power outages are possible. Unsecured light objects may become projectiles, the National Weather Service warns.

Burnie, Ellicott City, Catonsville, Woodlawn, Odenton, Pasadena, Arbutus, Ferndale, Brooklyn Park, Fort Meade, Savage-Guilford, Pumphrey, South Gate, Scaggsville, Ilchester and Linthicum.

A flash flood watch means that there is the potential for flash flooding, which can be life-threatening. Heavy rain in a short time can lead to flash flooding, or a rapid rise in water level.

These jurisdictions are under the flash flood watch from noon to 10 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 13:

  • Anne Arundel
  • Prince George's
  • Baltimore
  • Carroll
  • Frederick
  • Harford
  • Howard
  • Montgomery
  • Washington

"Aside from the flood threat, storms this afternoon and evening could produce localized damage due to gusty winds. Keep alert this afternoon and evening," the National Weather Service says.

In addition to northern and central Maryland, the National Weather Service has expanded the flash flood watch to include metro Washington, D.C., and parts of northwestern Virginia, including the Arlington, Alexandria and Fairfax areas.

During a flash flood watch, low-lying areas, roads and areas with poor drainage as well as streams and creeks may become inundated.
