Fred Klinken Sr., 89, of Annapolis, Formerly of Mayo: Obituary

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Fred Klinken Sr., 89, of Annapolis died at his home on January 11, 2017, surrounded by his family. Fred, also affectionately known as Boobie, was born to the late Pete and Elly Klinken at Thomas Point in Annapolis. Both of Fred's parents were immigrants from Germany in the 1920s and he spoke only German until he started school.

Fred grew up and lived in Mayo, joined the Navy during World War II and then worked for the Maryland State Treasurer's office for 31 years, serving as deputy state treasurer. Many still remember Klinken's baseball field in Mayo, where many Little-Leaguers crafted their skills.

Fred and his wife, Charlotte, lived in Heritage Harbor for the past 31 years. He was an accomplished duckpin bowler and horseshoe thrower in his younger days. Fred enjoyed taking care of the animals at his barnyard in Mayo, loved puttering around the yard, and especially loved visits from his family, friends and neighbors.

Fred is survived by his wife of 67 years, Charlotte; his children, Fred Klinken, Jr, and wife, Diane of Harwood, Terrie Klinken of Davidsonville, Jerry Klinken, and wife, Betsy of Davidsonville; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, January 17, from 6 pm to 8 pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater, where his service will be held on Wednesday, January 18 at 11 am. Contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake or the Calvary Church of Riva.
